2025 marks a remarkable milestone - 200 years since the world’s first steam-hauled public railway opened in the world. The Stockton & Darlington Railway, launched in 1825, transformed travel forever and sparked the railway revolution that shaped our towns, industries and imaginations.
Here at the Bure Valley Railway, we’re proud to be part of that story. While our narrow-gauge line between Aylsham and Wroxham might not move coal or commuters, it keeps alive the same pioneering spirit - sharing the sights, sounds and excitement of steam with today’s visitors. Behind the scenes, that heritage is upheld every day through traditional craftsmanship, from skilled metalwork and engineering to the detailed woodwork that goes into maintaining our locomotives and carriages, ensuring these timeless skills continue to thrive.
A Journey Through History
The Stockton & Darlington’s
Locomotion No. 1 was the first to haul paying passengers behind steam power - a moment that changed everything. From that small beginning grew a vast network of railways across the world, bringing people closer together and fueling the Industrial Revolution.
As part of the national celebrations, a working replica of Locomotion No. 1 retraced the original
Stockton & Darlington Railway route in September 2025 - 200 years after the world’s first passenger steam train made that same journey. The event drew crowds from across the country, honouring the moment that set Britain’s railway story in motion.
Fast forward two centuries, and heritage lines like the Bure Valley Railway play an important role in keeping that legacy alive. Since opening in 1990, our line has welcomed generations of visitors to enjoy the golden age of steam, right here in the heart of the Norfolk countryside. Our beautifully maintained locomotives, including the powerful locomotives and our much-loved No. 1 Wroxham Broad, continue to tell that story every day, on every trip between Aylsham and Wroxham.
Bridging Past and Present
For us, the
200 Years of Rail celebrations aren’t just about looking back - they’re about recognising what keeps the railway world moving today. Every time one of our steam locomotives sets off down the line, it connects past and present: the craftsmanship of our engineers, the dedication of our volunteers, and the joy our passengers feel as they travel through the Norfolk Broads.
Heritage railways like ours are living museums - places where people can experience what rail travel once felt like, not just read about it. We see that spark in visitors of all ages: children waving at the driver, families sharing memories, and enthusiasts who’ve followed steam their whole lives. That’s what this anniversary truly celebrates - the enduring love of railways and the communities that keep them running.
